Limon a Turkish Delight

Now that I really think about it, I have never really been adventurous with my food when it comes to dining out. Whenever we decide to eat out I always head for Italian, Asian and traditional Australian cuisine. Don’t get me wrong, I love the other cuisines, but find it particularly difficult to read the menu. Often my boss takes us out to a beautiful French restaurant seen here  (it’s her favourite cuisine) and understanding the menu is very difficult for me. Nevertheless I always love the meals, they always taste just divine. So in an attempt to be ‘more’ adventurous I tried Turkish and let’s just say I was impressed. Limon is located in Brisbane’s south-east suburb of Underwood and as I found, was a real hidden secret. The people were a lovely mix of Aussie and Turkish staff and chefs making it feel wonderfully comfortable. It also had a charming decor that matched very well. The light shades were gorgeous along with the art work, tablecloths and other unique and individual pieces. The menu was difficult, but I have now learnt to focus on the main items (meat and sauce) when ordering. The Moroccan Lamb with Cous Cous I ordered was delish and I left thinking why had I  never tried Turkish before. Restaurant one of project ‘be adventurous’ complete. Next up is Muooz, an African cuisine restaurant that my boss insists we try. Keep an eye out for the blog entry next week.

Gyoza Heaven

If you love gyoza’s/dumplings (or even just like them a little bit) you will love Harajuku Gyoza. Unlike most restaurant trains that only target a certain demographic, whether it be age, class or social status, Harajuku Gyoza is one of those places that is classy, stylish, young and vibrant and family friendly.  Located in Fortitude Valley’s hot and happening Brunswick Street, Harajuku Gyoza has a great atmosphere and feels fun and happening, which suits it’s great location. They have every type of gyoza you can think of including deserts. There is nothing quite like the cherry ripe gyoza.  It’s a must! There’s no doubt that Harajuku should be on everyones “must try” list.

Let me just say, I love West End located in Brisbane inner southside. There are so many funky fashion boutiques, coffee shops, cafes and just gorgeous quirky objects that are so entertaining. No-one gets bored in West End. So when I came across The Burrow this weekend while wandering around the streets, I wasn’t at all surprised. The interior design of this cafe is so great that even if the food was bad, I would still recommend going there. It is fantastic. Think of a church; stained glass windows, wooden poles, wooden rafters and photographs, then think anything quirky; random lights, hanging pot plants, comic book pasted walls, drawings, cans, the list goes on. When seated you are just looking around at all the amazing things. Yes, the food was amazing and just as quirky. A hot chip pizza – who thinks of that. The Burrow was just all round quirky and fun.  A great place to visit and eat, and a perfect fit for West End.

Today, my boss (yes she can be fabulous) took us out for lunch. I work in a small office for a politician so it can be busy and often stressful. The last few weeks have been full on and we have been working super hard (doing extra hours and days) and today seemed like the perfect occasion for a break. We headed to C’est Bon, a cute little French restaurant in Woolloongabba. One of the things I enjoy most about going out to eat different cuisines is experiencing their culture. C’est Bon did not disappoint. The waitress greeted us with her gorgeous French accent; nothing feels more like France then a french accent. The interior design is cosy, warm and exactly what I imagined French cafes to look like. Even the toilets are somehow beautiful and designed with a French theme. Everything from the paintings to the chandeliers screamed France. The food; words cannot explain; it was incredible. With a delicious meal, a bottle of expensive champagne (the boss’s treat) and the sound of the French accents, you can just imagine yourself sitting staring out at the Eiffel Tower. The best way to start the weekend is to experience a little bit of France.

In my 23 years in this world I have never been a tea or coffee drinker. Yet, I love going to cafes, especially the hidden ones off lane ways and quiet streets (they are usually the best).  Big up-market cafes that have ‘the best coffee or tea’ are not the ones that pull me in. The small business cafes that really use their space well, are cosy with great design and quirky pieces that bring a sort of happy atmosphere to the place, are usually the ones that grab my attention. On my recent trip to Melbourne we made a stop at the Hopetoun Tea Rooms (mainly because I have never been to a tea room before and the cakes in the window were to die for). The Tea Room was all kinds of incredible. Amazing food, service, drinks and the room was just beautifully designed. I couldn’t stop staring at the walls and the roof! There was a line out the door the whole time we were there and it was packed inside, yet felt wonderfully cosy. Everything I look for in a place to wine and dine. My first time at a tea room, success. Even if all the other patrons where 20+years our senior. Can’t wait to find more to explore.

I think it’s time I let go of the hot chocolate with marshmallows (although I love it) and try some tea or coffee. Although, I really have no idea where to start. Any suggestions on some really great tea or coffee to try for a first timer?

Brisbane Festival

Today, while I was working, we received a delivery. One in those huge boxes. For some reason even when I am work and the delivery is not ‘really’ for me I can’t help but get a little excited and wonder what it may be. To my surprise and excitement it was the Brisbane Festival program catalogue. Now let me just say, I love the Brisbane Festival. The festival takes place in September and it is one of those exciting months when Brisbane really comes alive and shines. It has many events in the arts; theatre, music, dance and many other events such as fireworks displays, lighting shows, markets, food and much more. I have already sat down and bookmarked all the things I want to do and see; even better, the festival’s website is designed so you can search what you want to do and build your own itinerary, brilliant. Looks like September is going to be a busy, exciting month. Can’t wait.

Do it yourself dining

I am the kind of girl who usually dines out because I’m feeling particularly lazy (or busy) and couldn’t be bothered to cook. Yes, there are those times when you dine out for a celebration or special occasion, but most of the time it’s because it’s easy and you don’t have to do the washing up. Yet I am also the kind of girl who is fussy with how my food is cooked. I can’t think of how many times I have wanted to order a classic meat dish but have decided on something else because I was just not sure they would cook it the way I like it. Enter, ‘do it yourself dining’  This week I experienced ‘do it yourself dining’ at its best when I visited Lee’s Korean BBQ. No cleaning up, no preparation, yet you cook your meal, at your table, along with everyone else in the restaurant. Dining at its best.
